Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity.
This was my first experience with a world-renowned artist. In 2013 my friend, colleague and trombonist Sean Casey called and asked if I wanted to play a recording session with him and trumpeter Jake Boldman. Turns out KoЯn was flying in from Argentina to play a show in Dallas for Halloween and wanted to record horns on a remix track they were working on before leaving for another show. I had a gig that night already, but the session was later in the evening so the timing was perfect.
So I head to Audio Dallas in Garland to record wearing a tux from my previous gig. I think the last time I heard Korn was at a middle school dance. I honestly didn't know much about them or that they were still a band.
I have to admit I was not quite ready for a session like this, but as they say "luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity." They had a camera crew filming the entire process which was cool so hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed my fly tux and college haircut.
I imagined members of KoЯn wearing all black with make up on their face, angry demeanor, etc. but everyone was friendly and just like me. I spoke with their drummer about travel logistics. They use multiple hangars across the globe with their tour gear (including 12+ drum sets) and fly a shows worth of gear ahead of each gig so their crew is always moving on to the next.
The session was quick and easy. We stayed and hung out with everyone until 3AM as they continued to record B3 organ, auxiliary percussion and vocals. They thanked us for playing, teased the possibility of bringing horns on tour, handed us $100 each and off we went back to reality.
Think about that last sentence. $100 for recording on a track that is purchased and listened to by a minimum of 100,000 to potentially millions of people. This is normal in the music business. Obviously in the moment and that stage in my career I would have paid to record on the track. In the end it was a fun experience and start of my career collaborating with tier-1 artists. I look forward to what the future holds and maybe you will see me raging on stage with KoЯn someday.
Until further notice,
